Kirsten’s Perspective: Why Getting Healthy Feels So Overwhelming – And How to Make It Simpler

Kirsten’s Perspective

is a monthly reflection on making health feel clearer, calmer, and more human. Drawing on years of experience alongside physicians and patients, this series helps translate complex medical information into understandable, actionable insight – with compassion, context, and respect for where each person is starting.

Why Getting Healthy Feels So Overwhelming – And How to Make It Simpler

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to “get healthy,” you’re not alone.

In fact, it’s one of the most common things I hear from people when they walk into our clinic. They’re motivated. They care. They’ve done their homework. They’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, followed the experts, and tried to implement what they’ve learned. And yet instead of feeling empowered, they often feel confused, exhausted, and unsure of where to start.

I don’t blame them.

We live in an age of constant health information. One voice says cut carbs. Another says eat more. One promotes fasting. Another warns against skipping breakfast. Social media is filled with supplement recommendations, morning routines, biohacks, and wellness trends that make it feel like if you’re not doing all of it, you’re falling behind.

And this is where so many people get stuck.

What I’ve learned after years working in functional medicine is this: most people don’t need more information. They need clarity, context, and reassurance that they’re not failing if they’re not doing everything.

Why Health Feels So Complicated

Health used to feel simpler. You went to the doctor, you got a diagnosis, and you took a medication.

Now we understand much more about how the body actually works. We know that health is influenced by genetics, hormones, nutrition, sleep, stress, movement, inflammation, gut health, and environment. That deeper understanding is powerful, but without guidance, it can feel overwhelming very quickly.

Many people arrive with stacks of lab results they don’t fully understand, long lists of recommendations, and supplement cabinets overflowing with things they were told they “should” be taking. Instead of clarity, they feel anxious. Instead of confidence, they feel behind.

And here’s the part that surprises most people: doing more is rarely the solution.

The Most Common Pattern I See

One of the most common patterns I see is people trying to fix everything at once.

They start a new diet, add multiple supplements, overhaul their exercise routine, focus on sleep, manage stress, cut out sugar, and drink more water — all at the same time. They do it with the best intentions, but it quickly becomes unsustainable.

Health doesn’t improve through intensity. It improves through consistency and understanding.

In functional medicine, we focus on prioritization. We look for leverage points — the areas that, when addressed first, create the biggest ripple effect throughout the body. Sometimes that means supporting digestion before detox. Sometimes it means stabilizing blood sugar before focusing on weight. Sometimes it means simplifying rather than adding more.

And sometimes it means helping someone slow down enough to actually feel safe in their body again.

Why Personalization Matters

One of the most frustrating experiences for patients is feeling like they’re doing “all the right things” and still not seeing results.

Often, that’s because those recommendations weren’t designed for their body.

Two people can follow the same diet, take the same supplements, and live very different outcomes. Genetics, hormones, stress load, past health history, and life circumstances all matter. Context matters.

That’s why the better question isn’t “What’s the best diet?” or “What supplements should I take?”
It’s “What does my body need right now?”

And sometimes, the answer isn’t another protocol. Sometimes it’s regulation, rest, and reassurance.

Making Health Feel Manageable Again

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here’s where I suggest starting:

Slow down.
Seek clarity before action.
Focus on foundations first.
Let go of comparison.
Work with someone who can help you prioritize and interpret, not just collect information.

Health should feel supportive, not stressful. Empowering, not confusing.

That’s why I’m writing this series – to help quiet the noise, bring perspective to the process, and remind you that meaningful change doesn’t come from doing everything perfectly. It comes from doing what matters most, at the right time, for your body.

You don’t need to do everything.
You just need to take the right next step.

And today, that might be as simple as breathing deeply, reflecting on a few things you’re grateful for, and letting yourself pause long enough to feel the sun on your skin as it sets. That moment of presence is more than relaxation – it’s the first step in regulating your nervous system.

That alone is progress.
Well done.
